Marie Durnová was born in Brno on July 24, 1943. In 1960, according to her biography on the website of the National Theater in Brno, she was not accepted to the Janáček Academy of Performing Arts (JAMU) and entered the Jiří Wolker Theater in Prague (today’s Dlouhá Theater). where she spent two seasons.

She then returned to Brno, where she rejected an offer to study at JAMU and worked at the Mrštík Brothers Theater.
