Isabella Schmid (50) is a woman with many talents: She played in over 65 TV productions, embodied the leading role in four TV series, movies such as “Papa Moll” and has appeared in over 70 theater productions. The range of her roles is colorful – now she also impresses in black and white. “I bought an old Rollei camera from 1955 and started taking analogue photos,” she explains enthusiastically.
–
Her partner, the Zurich photographer Urs Gantner (56), got a taste for it two years ago. He also has a great passion for black and white photography and develops the photos himself in the darkroom. “Taking photos the old way is extremely exciting,” enthuses the actress. “You can’t just take the print like with digital photography, you have to wait for the result.” In addition to street photography, Isabella Schmid is primarily interested in portraits. In times of selfies, it opens up new perspectives – for example on the actor Walter Andreas Müller (70).

Vivian Maier as a role model
“Playing with depth of field and contrasts particularly appeals to me in analog photography. The pictures take on a completely different character. ” One of her role models is the American Vivian Maier (1926–2009). The nanny gained fame after she died when many of her paintings were discovered by chance, which have survived the years unscathed. For Isabella Schmid it is clear: “Analog photos have a special value because they are practically immortal.”

Soon on the Swiss stage
And so the lively Zurich woman uses every free moment to press the shutter button. In the near future, however, it will be a tight spot with the snap. Because this summer she is playing the leading role in the comedy “Die Niere” at the Casinotheater Winterthur. “It’s about a woman who puts her husband, a notorious cheater, through their paces using unfamiliar methods.” And then there’s the script for a big new movie role on her bedside table.
–
But Isabella Schmid will not be without her new passion. “My photos give me back a lot of love and exciting creativity,” she says, fascinated.
