Chiume was born in Welkom, Free State Province, South Africa. Her father was from Malawi and her mother was Zulu. Although she studied to become a nurse, she worked as a teacher before turning to acting. In 1989, she became famous in the television series Inkom ‘Edla Yodwa, after which she became a fixture on South African television.
She is internationally known for her role as Zawavari in the 2018 film Black Panther and the sequel Black Panther: Long Live Wakanda. She has also received numerous awards throughout her career including the NTVA Avanti Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series for her role in Soul City or the SAFTA Award for Supporting Actress best for her portrayal of Stella Moloi in Zone 14.
