She was born on January 17, 1922. She began her acting career in 1939, but her promising career was interrupted by World War II. She did not return to television and film until 1949.

In 2012, she won a Grammy Award and became the oldest winner of this award, as well as seven Emmy Awards, six of which for acting. She became the first woman to win an Emmy from a television competition and also the only person to have an Emmy in any of the women’s categories.

She was married three times, her last (third) husband was the American actor Allen Ludden, with whom she was until his death in 1981. She also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
