Actress and academic Gloria Varela Betancur, an icon of culture and the arts in the city of Concepción and southern Chile, announced that he is retiring after more than 50 years of work in local tables, colleges and universities. “I want to have time for myself,” he explained.
The Catholic University of the Holy Conception (UCSC), where in recent years she was director of Artistic and Cultural Extension after passing through the Faculty of Law in the same house of studies, reported the events through a statement highlighting her “extensive, prolific and recognized professional life.”
The retirement of the actress, who also worked at the Universidad del Desarrollo, the Universidad de Concepción and the Universidad San Sebastián, in addition to almost 20 years at the Charles de Gaulle school as a Spanish teacher, will be effective as of this 30th of November.
In conversation with BioBioChile, Varela specified that his decision is due to the fact that “now I want to read, I want to have time for myself. I have given myself whole. I don’t want any commitments, because I’ve been committed my whole life. ”
Varela, who fondly remembers each of his works and even lists some of his hundreds of students who became public figures, acknowledged that he “donated” himself to public life, to his students and to a job well done and which must now stop. Above all, he said, after the arrival of the coronavirus in Chile.
“When the pandemic hit I felt terrible, because in March 2020 I was ready to start and they told me I couldn’t go, because older people had to take care of themselves. I had never been absent, nor was I late. I worked my whole life like this“, said.
The actress studied theater in the 1960s at the University of Concepcion to later be selected at the Teatro de la University of Concepcion (TUC). He worked, he remembered, along with Jaime Vadell, Delfina Guzmán, Nelson Villagra, and other actors from a golden generation.

Likewise, they recognize the “enormous honor of having counted on her talent, always with dedication for a job well done (…) with the admiration of all of us who worked and learned with her”.
