The actors’ strike continues. On July 25 in New York, many movie stars demonstrated.
“The SAG-Aftra national council has voted unanimously for a strike order against studios and broadcasters,” announced Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, national general manager of the SAG-Aftra union, on July 13. The SAG-Aftra represents more than 160,000 actors, extras and professionals from all over the world, in the film, television and advertising sectors.
On July 15, the movement took place in Los Angeles. On July 25, it spread to New York City. A rally, made up of many stars of the big screen and called “Rock the City for a Fair Contract” (“A city mobilized for a fair contract” in French) took place in Times Square. Bryan Cranston, known for his roles in the “Malcolm” and “Breaking Bad” series, did not fail to speak: “We will not accept that you deprive us of our right to work and earn decently our life […] We will not allow our jobs to be taken away and handed over to robots [..] Finally, and most importantly, we will not let you deprive us of our dignity! We are a union united until the end. “The comedian, who was dressed in a T-shirt bearing the inscriptions of the SAG-Aftra, aimed directly at the streaming platforms and more specifically Bob Iger, the CEO of Disney.

What are they claiming?
The advent of streaming is in real danger for audiovisual professionals. Eric Edelstein, an actor who had a small role in “Jurrassic World”, recently confirmed this in the columns of the “Los Angeles Times”. Over a period of one semester, the income he obtained through the broadcast of the film on cable channels brought him 1250 euros. The reruns in streaming have, for their part, allowed him to touch 35 euros. A phenomenon that will undoubtedly be fatal to a multitude of actors much less paid.
The actors, who fear being replaced by artificial intelligence, also demand guarantees aimed at preventing the cloning of their voice and their face without their agreement.
historic moment
“This is a historic moment! If we don’t get up now […] We are all at risk of being replaced by machines and big corporations that care more about Wall Street than you and your family,” said “Nanny From Hell” star Fran Drescher. Hollywood actors had not gone on strike since the 80s. As for the last social movement bringing together screenwriters and actors, it dates back to 1960.
