Actor Valery Yordanov has filed a lawsuit against the National Theater! He revealed himself to “Bulgaria today“.
The incident is difficult with copyright bills by the theater director Vasil Vassilev for his one-man show “Karakonjul”. According to the actor, the words of the show are based on the story of Nikolay Haitov, with whom he graduated and played over the years. The rest of the texts with which he completed the play are his own. In the contract with Haitov’s heirs, it is written that they provide the National Theater with the story of the play’s creation, but the author’s name is nowhere to be found.
Months ago, Valery Yordanov sent an official letter to the leader of Narodnia Vassilev with a request for change. And be listed as the author or co-author of the play. The director rejects it. Therefore, his role in the performance of “Karakonjul” remains only as an actor. According to Yordanov, the director of the People’s Theater, Vasil Vassilev, told him that the theater is the owner and producer of the shows. But Yordanov immediately objected: “In this case, the theater only owns the decor, my performance and … the spotlights, not the text,” says the popular actor.
Therefore, the beloved artist and his lawyers filed a lawsuit in court. This happened after the end of the theater season, and their investigation is expected to begin next month.
“I created “Karakonjul” during the pandemic at the request of the director at the time, to have another one-man play in the crisis. I wrote “Karakonjul” based on the play “The Savages”, which I created and performed in Youth Theater and “Tear and Laughter”. my play “Karakonjul”, with which we have worked wonderfully for years, also inspired me with ideas and directions for writing, with me.
This is not the first time that the actor is in conflict with the head of the theater Vasilev. The two filed several lawsuits against each other after the scandals in Narodniya in 2022, which erupted from the conflict between Alexander Morfov and the former journalist of the theater Velislava Krasteva.
“The court rejected both applications in the first instance in one case. I am waiting to see what happens in the second case, as well as other cases,” said Yordanov.
If the actor wins the copyright case for “Karakonjul”, he is sure to play the popular production throughout Bulgaria, and for Bulgarians abroad.
“This is one of the most watched plays in the National Theatre. With awards and… there have been no tickets since it was performed. The audience is seated on the stairs, and they put it on the program once a month or every two months. Recently, a young colleague told me that he watched “Karakonjul” 6 times,” said Yordanov. .
Although he plans to remove one of the most watched plays from the program, Yordanov is sure that “he will not stop playing at the National Theater until someone destroys him, ” the 50-year-old actor also said.
