Actor Ryan O’Neal: From Love Story to Hollywood Stardom

American actor Ryan O’Neal, best known for his role in the romantic film Love Story, for which he earned an Oscar nomination, died at the age of 82. Citing his son Patrick, the BBC and other media reported on it. The family did not disclose the cause of death. However, the actor was diagnosed with chronic leukemia in 2001 and prostate cancer in 2012.

“Dad was a Hollywood legend. Period. Dad passed away peacefully with his loving team by his side,” son Patrick O’Neal wrote on Instagram. “He was generous as a person. And he was always the funniest guy in the room. And definitely the nicest, but also the most charming. A deadly combination,” he added.

O’Neal’s rugged visage catapulted him to Hollywood stardom after the film Love Story, a love story between a talkative Harvard student and a girl from a poor family who dies of a malignant disease. The American Film Institute considers the film one of the ten most romantic titles of all time.

In 1972, O’Neal starred in the wild comedy What’s Next, Doctor? alongside Barbra Streisand. In 1979, he appeared with her again in the film Woman in the Ring. “I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Ryan O’Neal,” Streisand now wrote on the X network. “He was funny and charming. He will be remembered,” she added.

In the 1973 film Paper Moon, he portrayed a Depression-era con artist. His nine-year-old daughter Tatum O’Neal, who won an Oscar for her supporting role, also appeared in the film. Two years later, in the now classic historical drama Barry Lyndon, directed by Stanley Kubrick, he played the main part of a hochstapler with the ambition to break into the nobility. After the 1977 war drama A Bridge Too Far, his most famous acting period ended.

O’Neal was born in Los Angeles in 1941. His mother was a theater actress, his father a writer and screenwriter. He took up boxing at school and built a respectable figure. Later he came to the first minor television roles.

He was married twice. First with American actress Joanna Moore, with whom he had two children, including daughter Tatum, then with actress Leigh Taylor-Young, winner of the TV Emmy Award, with whom he had a son, Patrick.

O’Neal maintained a long-term stormy relationship with actress Farrah Fawcett. It ran from 1979 to 1997 and then from 2001 until Fawcett’s death in 2009. In an interview with Piers Morgan in 2011, O’Neal said that re-watching Love Story “actually upsets him”.
