Actor Rudolfs Plēpis: A Look into His Life and Health Challenges in 2021

Due to the deterioration of his health a few years ago, the actor Rudolfs Plēpis left his one-room apartment on Alunāna street and moved in with his youngest daughter Viktorijas Plēpis in her apartment in Ķengaraga. Rudolph was deeply shocked by the sudden loss of light in his eyes – when he woke up one morning and opened his eyes, there was a “dark picture” in front of him. Viktoria took care of all the daily care of Plėpi – both the preparation of meals and care at home, as well as the countless visits to doctors and taking care of formalities.

That’s how the actor lived for two years, until he got sick. “I must let her live. A young woman, she has to live her own life,” the actor decided and moved to live in a nursing home in Vidzeme. Well, his home was the Adventist seniors’ home “Zilaiskalns”, and Rudolph was satisfied with the living conditions.

His large pension of about 600 euros was enough to pay for the nursing home, although in general, the actor believes that it is expensive, as it costs old people to live in a nursing home. “Many people cannot realistically afford such extras, because pensions are small. In material terms, we have to be a burden to children and relatives again,” sighs Plēpis, who lived in the nursing home for three months. “Everything was good and nice there, people were pleasant, responsive, caring. Only its cost! Also, only after I got to the nursing home, I found out that there is vegetarian food. Delicious, but completely meat-free! As a person who is used to occasionally eating a bite of meat or sausage with a bun, I sometimes craved something similar. There were even cases when I used to give money to the manager of the seniors’ home, with whom I had developed a very nice relationship, to bring me an anchovy from a store in Valmiera,” Rudolfs Plēpis tells “Kas Jauns” magazine.

Well, his home is once again his own one-room apartment in Riga, and on a daily basis Mr. Plēpis and his home are kept clean and tidy by a hired employee of a caregiving organization. “The caregiver makes me coffee in the morning, prepares food, takes care of what needs to be taken care of. Helps with everything that is needed and that I cannot do myself due to my blindness. This way, living in my own home and not being dependent on others, I feel much better. Daughter Victoria and granddaughter Maria regularly communicate with me, visit me; I don’t feel lonely and abandoned at all. Also, every now and then I talk on the phone with my eldest daughter Astriņa, who lives in Edinburgh, Scotland. I am waiting for her to visit in Riga in the month of March, and I am very happy about the recently published news that this summer Astra will become the mother of a second child. I will have a third grandchild!” Rudolfs Plēpis is happy.
