Actor Matthew Perry, known from the TV series Friends, is deceased. Multiple sources report that he was found dead in his home in Los Angeles. He was 54 years old.
According to showbiz site TMZ, Perry was found dead by his assistant in a jacuzzi. When asked about a 911 call at Perry’s home address, police said an investigation was underway into the death of a man in his 50s.
Emmy nominations
Perry starred as the character Chandler for ten seasons in the popular series Friends, about a group of friends in New York. He was nominated for an Emmy three times, once for his role in Friends and twice for his appearance as a White House advisor in the TV series The West Wing. He also had roles in some well-known films such as Fools Rush In in The Whole Nine Yards.
Friends ran from 1994 to 2004. By the time the extremely successful series came to an end, the actors were paid $1 million per episode. At the time, it was not known that Perry was struggling with an addiction to drugs, especially painkillers, and alcohol. In his memoirs, he wrote that those addictions gave him a sense of shame that caused him to keep the addiction a secret. “Friends was a huge thing. I couldn’t jeopardize that.”
The actor already followed during the recording of Friends different programs for detoxification. He later opened a rehab clinic in Malibu, which he sold in 2015 due to the high costs.
