Actor Matthew McConaughey, born in Uvalde, Texas, speaks after the massacre

One of the most famous personalities born in Uvalde, Texas, actor Matthew McConaughey, said in a tweet Tuesday night that gun violence is an epidemic that Americans can control.

In a lengthy tweet, the actor who flirted with the possibility of running for governor of Texas this year shared his thoughts on the shooting that left 19 children and two adults dead at an elementary school in his hometown.

“We have tragically shown that we are not responsible for the rights that our freedoms grant,” McConaughey wrote.

The Oscar-winning actor said a “reassessment” is needed.

“This is an epidemic we can control, and whichever side of the aisle we are on, we can be better at,” McConaughey tweeted. “Measures must be taken so that no parent should experience what Uvalde’s parents and all previous (parents of murdered children) went through.”

The actor has previously defended the right to bear arms contained in the Second Amendment of the Constitution, but at the same time denounced the violence with firearms in the United States.
