Actor Jaroslav Dušek’s Controversial Views on Cancer and Lifestyle

During the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, moderator Čestmír Strakatý conducted an interview with actor Jaroslav Dušek. The latter is known for his belief in an alternative approach to life, and when it came up in an interview attended by the boss, the actor began to reflect on cancer as a consequence of the lifestyle.

To confirm his words, he took as an example his mother and both of her parents, all of whom were fatally affected by this very diagnosis. “You think that person will die of cancer. And I think he’ll die because he hates life,” he explained to an obviously surprised Spotted. “That person doesn’t like life, doesn’t like himself,” insisted the artist.

The moderator protested that it was terrible to say that to people who are fighting the disease. “No, that’s the message that he can turn around if he wants,” Dušek disagreed. And finally, he stated that it is possible to predict which of the cancer patients will die and which will recover.

“I can’t help but remember my mother’s death. She died of cancer and she wanted to live,” objected Čestmír Strakatý.

“Just because someone says they want to live, doesn’t mean they want to,” Dušek confidently explained. According to Dušek, we will know if he really wants it from the way he lives.

Jaroslav Dušek is a well-known believer in an alternative way of life. She eats only once a day according to the Australian Jasmuheen’s diet and otherwise tries to live in accordance with her philosophy.

War boils

The President of the Czech Stomatological Chamber, Roman Šmucler, sees his passion for an alternative approach to health primarily in the fear of family history. “He does the possible and the impossible so that he doesn’t go crazy and the disease doesn’t get him,” he thinks.

Other doctors did not have such understanding. Including Professor Vlastimil Válek, Minister of Health.

“I confess that my blood boils when I hear similar blasphemous and especially insensitive nonsense towards cancer patients and their loved ones! Oncology patients and their loved ones deserve the maximum level of support, not such insensitive attacks and accusations,” he urges.

Although freedom of speech must be respected, such “ezo nonsense” is equivalent to what pro-Russian trolls are posting on the Internet, according to the minister.

“Please, cancer is not a conscious suicide by choice. “Suicide is believing such nonsense, refusing treatment and ignoring prevention,” says the minister. According to him, strengthening prevention is the most appropriate fight against cancer, and stupid statements that discourage it are harmful.

It is not the first time that Jaroslav Dušek got into a dispute with the Ministry of Health. This was opposed to the public promotion of his alternative approach already during the covid pandemic.

He is also the holder of the silver anti-prize of the Stray Boulder, which was awarded to him by the Sisyphos Society “for good shamanic advice for every day” already in 2008. In the justification, it was stated that he is “equipped mainly with an esoteric mental chalamada”.

Professor Žaloudík of calm passion: I remember such healers…

Professor Jan Žaloudík, a former senator and oncologist, does not think that one exposure of a barefoot actor in a pulled-up T-shirt would fundamentally affect the population’s health care.

“There have always been Rasputins,” the former dean of the Brno Medical Faculty and director of the Masaryk Oncology Institute told ParlamentnímListům.cz.

Even in the 1970s and 1980s, when he started out as a doctor, they were said to exist and part of the public listened to them for some reason.

“The influence of these preachers is terribly small,” the former senator is convinced. He has trust in the public mainly on the basis of prevention statistics.

That is why he does not think that any dramatic statements are needed, as demonstrated by Minister Válek.

“I am not convinced that the doctor should be fully responsible for the patient. I believe in the Texas saying that you can lead a horse to water, but he has to drink himself.”

If Dušek’s words came from a medical authority, it would be serious, according to Professor Žaloudík. “The thing that scared me the most when I heard the name Dušek was that it was explained by the director of the Institute of Health Information and Statistics. But when I found out that it was Mr. Dušek Jaroslav, an actor, I calmed down,” he said.

If the actor explains about medical issues in an interview, according to him, it is a “fun case for the summer” that has “about as much relevance as if Žaloudík were commenting on ballet.”

“But I still believe that most people are controlled by the brain,” revealed the professor. People can filter information and react in a way that does not endanger their health.

According to Žaloudík, the oncology care system works, it manages to cure two-thirds to three-quarters of malignant tumors. If someone chooses to ignore preventive screenings for earlier detection and only come when they are really sick, that is their choice.

“What we always warn patients against are charlatans who offer, for example, some miracle drops for 300,000 crowns and make money off of fear,” he adds. Otherwise, however, there is no need for followers of these procedures to get too excited.

As for Jaroslav Dušek, he sees the stoic attitude of the British as the most appropriate reaction to this opinion: “The Brit smiles, says ok, it is interesting, understands that there is no point in talking with you any further, and walks away,” described ParlamentnímListům.cz.
