In the Czech Republic, Jones became famous especially for the mentioned role of a private detective in the series, for which he received an Emmy Award in 1991. He also appeared in the epic saga Roots, describing the fates of several generations of an African family, or in the series With Us in Sprigfield, the first “soap opera” in which black characters began to appear regularly.

A number of viewers are also familiar with his characteristic deep voice, in addition to Star Wars, he was also heard, for example, in the fairy tale The Lion King in the role of King Mufasa.

“The need to tell stories has been with us since time immemorial. I think it started at the campfires when a man came home and told his family he got a bear and the bear wasn’t his,” Jones told the AP in 2015 of his passion for stories. Even at that time, when he was 84 years old, he tried out for a play on Broadway.

On the stage, he achieved great success, especially for his portrayal of heavyweight boxer Jack Jefferson in the drama Great White Hope. He received a Tony Award for this performance, and the film adaptation earned him an Oscar nomination in 1971. He received the prestigious golden statuette in 2012, when he received an honorary Oscar.

During his life he acted in five dozen films. Among the most well-known among the audience are Hunt for the Submarine, Doktor Divnoláska or How I Learned Not to Worry and Love the Bomb, Conan the Barbarian or The Greatest about the boxer Muhammad Ali. His voice is also familiar to viewers of the American television CNN, where for many years the sentence spoken by Jones was heard: “This is CNN.”
