Dundaga Castle is the oldest and largest castle in North Kurzeme, which is closely connected with the heritage of Baltic German culture. It was built next to the Curonian Spit in Vanema and since 1237 it was registered in the diocese of Riga, later in the cathedral of Riga, and for more than 200 years (until the agrarian reform of 1920) it belonged to the Ostenzaken family, which ruled both North and South Kurzeme. Thanks to the financing of the European Regional Development Fund, large-scale renovation works of the castle were completed in 2021 – part of the premises on the first and second floors were restored.
