Actor Ian McKellen Reveals Surprising Choices for Gandalf Role in Latest Interview

Actor Ian McKellen won the affection of thousands of viewers with his portrayal of Gandalf. Now it is practically impossible to separate the actor from the magician, but the character could have had a completely different face.

This is how the actor himself recalled it in his last interview with Variety. With a mocking tone, Ian McKellen revealed that both Anthony Hopkins as Sean Connery were early candidates to play Gandalf in Peter Jackson’s films.

“I don’t think you’ll ever be the first choice. I certainly wasn’t to Gandalf.. Anthony Hopkins rejected it and Sean Connery did too. Now they’re all coming out of nowhere and I hope they feel like idiots,” the actor said in the interview.

Although McKellen only spoke of two companions, It is rumored that there are many more actors who rejected the iconic character. Among them are Christopher Plummer, Sam Neill and even Patrick Stewart, known for playing Professor Xavier in the X-Men films.

Retire for what?

In the same interview, which was carried out on the occasion of the film directed by Anand Tucker and titled “The Critic”, McKellen made it clear that It will continue to act as long as the body allows it..

“I’ve never been out of work, but I’m aware that at any moment something could happen to me that prevents me from working again. But as long as my knees hold up and my memory remains intact, why shouldn’t I? Continue? I really feel like I’m pretty good at acting now.“said the actor in the interview.

McKellen’s latest statements come at a very exciting time for fans of The Lord of the Rings. Embracer Group has made it clear that it has many plans for the saga and, most recently, it has been announced Tales of the Shire, an adorable new game inspired by Hobbits.
