Australian actor Hugh Jackman, who plays the character of Wolverine in the “X-Men” film series, and his wife Deborra-Lee Verence Jackman have announced their separation after 27 years of marriage.
They said in a joint statement received by “People” magazine, which specializes in celebrity news, “We have decided to separate so that each of us can continue developing on a personal level,” according to Agence France-Presse.
In this statement, which is expected to be the only statement on the subject of their separation, the couple confirmed that they “were fortunate to live together for nearly three decades as a couple in an amazing, loving marriage.”
They added, “We begin this new phase with gratitude, love and kindness,” according to the French agency.
The two actors met in 1995 during the filming of the series “Corelli”, and then they married a year later.
At that point, Deborra-Lee Furness had achieved fame, especially thanks to her role in the film “Chaim”, while Hugh was still a recent graduate with a degree in dramatic arts studies.
Hugh Jackman achieved international fame in 2000, after playing the role of Wolverine in the first part of the “X-Men” series, in parallel with his career on Broadway.
The Australian actor, 54, and Deborah, 67, have a son, Oscar, 23, and a daughter, Ava, 18.
They said in the statement, “Our family has been and will always remain our most important priority.”
