Actor Harrison Ford Inspires Naming of New Snake Species, Tachymenoides harrisonfordi

A newly discovered species of snake has been named after actor Harrison Ford. The naming is due to his character Indiana Jones’ snake phobia, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

The snake species is called Tachymenoides harrisonfordi. “Scientists keep naming critters after me, but it’s always animals that frighten children,” Ford, 81, told me. The Hollywood Reporter. “I don’t get it. I spend my free time embroidering and singing lullabies to my basil plants so they aren’t afraid of the dark.”

“But this discovery also humbles me,” the actor continues. “It makes you realize that we still have so much to learn about this world, and that humans are just one small part of an unimaginably large universe.”

The snake is light yellow-brown with black spots. Collaborating researchers from Peru and the United States have discovered the animal. A publication on the species has now appeared in the scientific journal Salamander.
