Two-time Academy Award-winning actor Gene Hackman retired from public life two decades ago, ending his career as well. Since then, he and his wife stayed away from all the happenings. Only now was it possible to photograph the pair on the way from a joint dinner at a restaurant in New Mexico.
In the pictures, the 94-year-old Hackman is captured holding the arm of his wife, Betsy Arakawa, who is 32 years his junior, as she helps him keep his balance. The pair were last seen together in 2003. A year later, Hackman announced that he was ending filming.
“I haven’t held a press conference to announce my retirement, but yes, I’m not going to play anymore. I’ve been advised over the last couple of years not to say it, in case there’s an exceptional role, but I really don’t want to play anymore.” he told Reuters about his decision years ago. He also stated that after leaving the world of film, he intends to devote himself to writing.
“I actually like the solitude. It’s similar to acting in some ways, but it’s more private and I feel like I have more control over what I’m trying to say and do. There’s always a trade-off in acting and film, you’re working with so many people, and everyone has an opinion. I enjoy writing more than acting. It’s relaxing and calming to me.”
