Legendary American actor Ed Asner passed away at the age of 91, according to a message from his relatives on his Twitter account. “We are sorry to say that our dear patriarch passed away this morning in peace. Words cannot express the sadness we feel. With a kiss on your head: good night dad. We love you”, they wrote.

During his career, Asner was nominated 17 times for Emmy Awards and won 7 statuettes: 5 for his role as journalist Lou Grant in the series’ The Mary Tyler Moore Show ‘, one for playing Axel Jordache in the miniseries’ Rich Man , poor man ‘(titled’ The rich and the poor ‘in Latin America) and one for the role of Captain Thomas Davies in the miniseries’ Roots’. In addition, he was nominated 11 times for the Golden Globes and received 4 for the role of Lou Grant and one for that of Axel Jordache.

He was also known for voicing curmudgeon grandfather Carl Fredricksen in the Pixar animated film ‘Up’.
