Actor, director and playwright Helmert Woudenberg died suddenly yesterday. His son reported this to the ANP news agency. The 78-year-old Woudenberg was touring the play Blind, and would perform several times in various theaters in the country next week. He died of a heart attack.
Woudenberg was one of the founders of the well-known theater collective Het Werktheater. He was known for roles in Dutch-German feature films, among others Blue Moviethe film Amsterdamned in tv-series Cops Maastricht, in which he played the role of commissioner Eugène Hoeben for several years.
The actor was born in 1945 in the German town of Elspe. He was the grandson of NSB leader Hendrik Jan Woudenberg and the son of Jan Woudenberg, who served in a Dutch unit of the Waffen-SS and was killed in Poland shortly before his birth. He played the performance about this background in 2004 Livable from his childhood friend Ischa Meijer, who survived the Bergen-Belsen camp as a child.
