Carl Weathers, known as the boxer Apollo Creed in the film Rocky, passed away on Thursday at the age of 76. His manager announced this on Friday.
“We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers,” manager Matt Luber said in a statement. “He died peacefully in his sleep.”
Before Weathers rose to fame as the brash and charismatic boxer Apollo Creed in the Rockyfilms, he was a professional American football player. He played in the first four Rocky-films.
Afterwards he had roles in films such as Predator and in various series. In total, Weathers appeared in more than 75 films and series during his fifty-year career.
The last series he starred in was The Mandalorian from Disney+. He returned several times during three seasons as Greef Karga. It earned him an Emmy nomination in 2021 in the best guest actor category.
The first Rocky was released in 1976 and won three Oscars. Various spin-offs followed. Creed III was last released in 2023.
