Actor Ashokan with four decades of acting career, Perillur Premier League’ web series
Rama in Peruvahiyambalam, Vishnu in Yavanika, Hilal in Arapattakettia Village, Ajayan in Anantaram, Raghavan in Amarat, Thomaskutty in Hariharnagar…..the list of immortal characters stretching across four decades, Malayali’s only Ashoka who brought them all to life is coming back, Keman Somanai in Perillur. Actor Ashokan is sharing the highlights of ‘Perillur Premier League’, which is set to hit the screens this New Year on Hot Star, with an interesting story laced with comedy in a rural setting.
What is Perillur Premier League…
= The movie tells the story that takes place in the countryside. There are a handful of events that all Malayalis can connect with in the storyline of the Perillur Premier League. The series can be described as a political satire. I play the character of Keman Soman, a local politician. One who contests and loses every election. Even if you lose, you will walk confidently as if you have won. Such an interesting character with many special features. I enjoyed playing the role of Soman. Soman appears on screen in a slightly different getup. Nikhila Vimal, Sunny Wayne, Vijayaraghavan, Aju Varghese etc. have a great cast in this series. I think the Perillur Premier League will be a great New Year’s gift for the Malayali audience

Are you happy with your opportunities in 2023?
=2023 was a good year for me. I didn’t get to do many films, but all the films I did were highly appreciated. In Nanpakal Nereth Mayakam directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery, he got to do a strong full-length role alongside Mammootty in the lead role. Got a lot of compliments. It is a film and a character that we can always be proud of. After that, he got to play the role of a father in a different getup in the movie Ntikakkakkoru Premandarnni. But there is a problem that the character did not get the expected importance or promotion. After that he did a web series called Masterpiece. His role as Kuryachan in it received a lot of appreciation. There are a handful of promising projects in 2024 like Kishkindha Kandam, Jai Ganesh, Jamal’s Smile, Milk and Fruit.
There have been a lot of changes in the technology and presentation of film, how it is viewed…
= Glad to be able to move with this change. Most of the films I am acting in now are with debutant directors. All of them approach cinema with the latest technology and methods. It is a blessing to be able to be a good character in those films too. Making movies today is much easier than it used to be. It is made possible by the advancement of technology. With the availability of various cameras and other equipment, things have changed to the way that films can be made today on any budget. That’s all good. Changes have pros and cons. Today, the relationship between people in cinema is less than before. Because with the advent of facilities like caravans, the conversation that used to take place during the breaks has disappeared. After the scene, things changed to the way people go and sit in the caravan. Meanwhile with the advent of the caravan came another advantage, it became a great facility to carry out our personal needs at outdoor shooting locations.
