He was even jailed in Qatar for acting in the movie ‘Pranamam’. He played a character who is a drug addict. He is a drug addict, injects and has everything.
After seeing the pictures in the magazine of Suhasini smoking, injecting, and holding Suhasini’s hand, some Malayalees took them and sent them to the CID department.

So when we went to Qatar, the CID came to the hotel where we were staying and searched all the rooms. The bag was torn, the bed was turned over and the fridge was searched.
Have I not gone to a feast, not an Arab land, not a land with terrible laws. At that time, after Saudi Arabia, Qatar was the country with the strictest laws. They took him to the police station. It is released the next day at eleven o’clock or twelve-thirty.

The incident happened in the month of July and August. There is no fan inside and it is very hot. There is only a small hole to see the light. So my fellow prisoner was a Pakistani. It’s just that I haven’t peed in a while. There was a perception that it was not the Pakistanis who would harm us.

At the front of each cell, the police stand guard with a gun. He was betrayed by someone saying that he was an agent of drugs. The policemen are six and a half feet tall Sudanese. Just seeing them will scare you. The next day at 11:30 an Arab police came with a paper and said ‘You are released’.

Then there was a news related to the movie ‘Anantaram’ in the local English newspaper. They had seen it. Kamal Haasan and Amitabh Bachchan were known in Indian cinema at that time. The policemen were laughing at me. I thought they must have known something, so I smiled back at them.

They had little knowledge of English. He asked ‘You friend Amitabh Bachchan’. I said yes. Amitabhachan has never seen in his life. I thought I should leave it like that. Another policeman asked ‘You Kamal Haasan’. So one and two said. There is hope in mind.

After half an hour after that, a policeman showed me the paper and said that I was released. I was in there crying. When I was caught, I didn’t know why I was being put inside,’ says Ashokan.
