Actor and Comedian Ewen MacIntosh, Known for Role in The Office, Dies at 50

The world of comedy has lost a true talent with the passing of actor and comedian Ewen MacIntosh at the age of 50. Best known for his role as “Big Keith” in the hit TV show The Office, MacIntosh brought laughter and joy to audiences around the world. His unique portrayal of the scotch egg-loving accountant Keith Bishop will forever be etched in our memories.

MacIntosh’s character, Keith Bishop, was a monotone-voiced accountant who had dreams of becoming a DJ. He was known for his hilarious scenes, such as when he dressed up as Ali G for Red Nose Day. One of his most memorable moments was in season two’s episode Appraisals, where office manager David Brent, played by Ricky Gervais, made him list his strengths and weaknesses. Keith’s deadpan responses and his inability to come up with any answers made for comedic gold.

Ricky Gervais, the creator of The Office, led the tributes to MacIntosh on Twitter, describing him as “an absolute original.” Stephen Merchant, the co-writer and co-director of the show, also paid tribute to MacIntosh on Instagram, calling him “a lovely and uniquely funny man.” Merchant fondly recalled how MacIntosh’s improvisation skills led to more dialogue being written for his character.

MacIntosh’s talent extended beyond The Office. He appeared in other British comedies such as Miranda and Little Britain. In 2017, he played Lionel in the romantic comedy film Finding Fatimah. He also made a memorable appearance in the final season of Ricky Gervais’ After Life, playing “Buffet Man,” a character who had been banned from his local all-you-can-eat restaurant.

In an interview with Vice in 2021, MacIntosh spoke about his character’s love for scotch eggs. He revealed that filming a scene where he had to eat a scotch egg took longer than expected, as he ended up consuming a lot of them. MacIntosh’s dedication to his craft and his ability to bring humor to even the simplest of scenes was truly remarkable.

MacIntosh’s fellow comedians and friends also paid tribute to him. Miranda Hart, who worked with MacIntosh on her show Miranda, expressed her gratitude for having the opportunity to work with him. Comedian and TV presenter Matt Lucas described MacIntosh as “sweet, smart, humble, and brilliantly funny.”

MacIntosh’s comedic talent was recognized by many in the industry. Actor Rufus Jones, who directed and wrote the comedy TV series Home, praised MacIntosh’s skills and called him an “absolute pleasure of a guy.” MacIntosh’s involvement in the Edinburgh sketch scene and his performances at the Fringe Festival showcased his comedic prowess.

Outside of his career, MacIntosh was known for his kindness and empathy. His friend Ed Scott described him as a man of integrity who brought smiles to the faces of those around him. MacIntosh’s passing is a great loss not only to the comedy world but also to those who knew him personally.

The cause of MacIntosh’s death has not been confirmed, but he passed away at Willow Green Care Home in Darlington. His agency, Just Right Management, announced that there would be a private cremation for family and close friends, followed by a celebratory memorial service later in the year.

Ewen MacIntosh’s legacy as a talented actor and comedian will live on through his unforgettable performances. His ability to bring laughter to audiences will be cherished for years to come. The comedy world mourns the loss of a true original, but we are grateful for the laughter he brought into our lives. Rest in peace, Ewen MacIntosh.
