The Biden administration hired immigration judges who initially worked during the Trump era. The move has upset activists who believe the White House has failed to reject the previous administration’s configuration of the judiciary.
The 17 hired officials are responsible for determining whether immigrants can remain in the country. However, The Hill He noted that those recruited appear not to have “made their careers representing migrants in court.”
The announcement was made by the Justice Department, and after the revelation, lawyers, advocates and even some former immigration judges questioned why the group so closely reflected the lawyers favored by the Trump administration.
“The 17 new immigration judges referenced in the notice received their conditional offers under the previous administration,” a Justice Department spokesman told The Hill.

They are also calling for the Biden administration to investigate judges hired to rebalance a judicial system heavily shaped by Trump’s team. The decision comes as a surprise as the Biden administration has worked to reverse Trump’s immigration policies and calls for a more humane response to migration.
“This is a list that I would have expected from Bill Barr or Jeff Sessions, but they are no longer the attorney general. Elections are supposed to have consequences, ”said Paul Schmidt, now an adjunct professor at Georgetown Law School after 21 years as an immigration judge.
“No one on that list is among the top 100 asylum authorities in the country, and those are the kind of people they should be hiring, not tax re-treads,” he added.
