Activists Occupy Wooded Area in Tarn to Oppose A69 Motorway Construction: Call for Zone to be Defended

They have been taking place for more than two months in a wooded area, located on the route of the future A 69 motorway, in Tarn. Activists opposed to the creation of the new motorway linking Castres to Toulouse are calling for the development of a Zone to be defended.

They set up tents, tree houses and even a refreshment area at La Crémade, renamed La Crém’Arbre, in Saïx, in Tarn.

There are around fifty activists, but also residents of the area or elsewhere, who have been taking turns for more than two months. They occupy private land there, at the location of the future A 69 motorway, which will link Castres to Toulouse, to oppose the creation of the latter. Activists launched a call on January 5 to join this new Zone to be defended.

We can rather talk about occupation, because we are on land which will be expropriated for the highwayexplains an activist from the collective La route est libre to our journalist Colette Aubert. It would be difficult to occupy 53 km of route, but we can at least occupy this wood which has a high biodiversity value“.

It is important to continue to fight, because there is still the basic appeal which has not been judged. Until that happens, we won’t stopspecifies Christine, another activist in the collective. For us, itThis is a useless ecocidal project. Those who live in Castres realize that this is going to be a super expensive, useless highway. We still hope that the project will be stopped, otherwise we would not fight.

On October 22, 2023, a first ZAD located nearby was evacuated. For the moment, those present have not received any threat of evacuation. The police come daily to monitor the place. “State services remain attentive to developments in the situation. However, the prefectural body does not wish to make any particular reaction on this subject”indicates the Tarn prefecture.

Work on the future highway continues at the same time. It is currently in its third phase out of the five planned. The opening is announced for 2025.
