This Friday morning, some 60 Extinction Rebellion (XR) activists blocked the entrance to the TotalEnergies oil depot in Mardyck, near Dunkirk in the north. Their action, dubbed “black out”, aims to stop the site’s activity and denounce the energy crisis that highlights “our deadly dependence on fossil fuels. “
Wearing white overalls, masks for some and banners for others, the Extinction Rebellion militants sat in front of the entrance to TotalEnergies’ Etablissement de Flandres oil depot from 9 am. This “civil disobedience action” aimed at “fossil industries and their financiers” punishes the “super-profits” of the energy giants while more and more French find themselves victims of “fuel poverty”, XR denounces in a statement.
A push before COP27
The activists’ operation also intends to put pressure on world leaders a few days after the opening of COP27 in Egypt. “It is our responsibility to put these climate criminals out of danger, in particular by depriving them of financial support,” insists the organization, specifying that 5 of its activists had been arrested by police deployed on the spot.
