Activists and LGBT+ community protest to demand monkeypox vaccine

With the objective that the health authorities in Mexico carry out a comprehensive prevention strategy to prevent the population from the transmission of monkeypox, Several activists and members of the LGBT+ community demonstrated outside the Undersecretary for Prevention and Health Promotion on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 26.

The director of the organization VIHve Libre and organizer of the protest, Alaín Pinzón, stressed that recent statistics show that most cases occur in men who have sex with men and vulnerable populations are people who are living with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

However, also the need for the media to avoid stigma and discrimination was emphasizedsince the dynamics of the current spread of the virus may change to spread to other populations if the necessary prevention actions are not carried out in a timely manner.

That is why groups such as AHF Mexico, AHF Latin America and the Caribbean presented five basic demands for the governmentfrom the immediate action of the health sector to the purchase of vaccines to prevent monkeypox.

After the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a health emergency due to the outbreak of monkeypox in the world, the Undersecretary of Health, Hugo López-Gatell, assured during a morning press conference that Mexico complied with the recommendations of the highest health body to deal with the virus.

In addition, the public official disclosed the creation of a web portal to provide more information about the symptomspreventive measures and actions to take if there is a person infected with the virus at home.

Among the main symptoms highlighted by the website are the sudden onset of fever, headache, exhaustion, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, profound weakness and skin lesions in the form of blisters.

However, the information presented on the portal received criticism from the activists who protested, as it is “insufficient” by not providing information about health centers or institutions to which you can go if you are infected.

“In that specific portal, it does not come that the Secretary of Health can and should give isolation by internment to all those people who cannot isolate themselves in their homes, because they do not live alone or because they do not have space to isolate themselves and that should be there”, said Alaín Pinzón.

It should be noted that Condesa Specialized Clinic released a statement in which It is recommended to go to the Health Centers T III or to one of its locations to have an adequate diagnosis and medical assessment in case of suspicion of being infected with monkeypox.

Until now, the Secretary of Health confirmed 60 cases in the country, 35 cases are registered in Mexico City (CDMX); 13 in Jalisco; 2 in the State of Mexico; 2 in Nuevo León, and 2 in Veracruz. On the other hand, in Baja California, Colima, Oaxaca, Quintana Roo, Sinaloa and Tabasco one patient is counted.

Worldwide there is a record of just over 16,000 cases with five deaths in 75 countriesand although Hugo-López Gatell denied that monkeypox would “spread widely”, the official assured that cases would increase.

The United States ranks as the country in the world with the most positive diagnoses of monkeypox, with a historical increase of 1,048 cases in one day. With this, the country is in the lead, followed by Spain, which has a count of more than 3,700 infections.

As of last Wednesday, the country’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported 3,591 cases. However, on Thursday morning, the figure had increased to 4,639.The majority of cases are concentrated in New Yorkwhich reported 1,228, followed by California with 799.
