Action from independent developer STARWIELD has been removed at Bethesda’s request

Along with the release of a major addition to Starfield, Bethesda decided to give an unexpected surprise to two new developers who recently released their small action game STARWIELD. True, it cannot be said that it is pleasant, because it was a complaint about a DMCA violation, which led to the removal of the game from Steam.

Spoiler alert

DMCA takedown notice for your item

Valve has received a DMCA takedown notice for your game on Steam at https://store.steampowered.com/app/2933500/STARWIELD/. A full copy of the notice is posted at:

end of this letter. Matthew Dean of Zenimax Media, Inc. on behalf of Bethesda Game Studios stating that they are the copyright holders of the Starfield game content, which can be found here:

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1716740/Starfield/ and that you use their game content, including but not limited to the story, map levels, gameplay and characters without their consent infringing on their rights.

As a result of this complaint, we have temporarily removed your game from Steam, as required by law.

Valve follows the procedures set out in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The DMCA is a US copyright law that governs the liability of online service providers in the event of a claim of copyright infringement. When we receive a DMCA notice, Valve must remove the allegedly infringing material; otherwise Valve can be sued for copyright infringement.

Information about Zenimax Media, Inc. is now a subsidiary of Microsoft, and was previously known as the owner of Bethesda Softworks and id Software. Despite the fact that much of the game was used as a part of paradise, someone at the STARWIELD studio did not like it very much.

Developer Roman Kharlamov described the situation as follows:

I don’t know what to do yet; it seems that the page can only be regenerated if the project is re-uploaded under a different name. All in all, I was happy with the news, I even won some money, + I always dreamed of having a “game developer” coin, but now the game is not on Steam and the coin is on go =(

Judging by the remaining steamDB statistics, the game had relatively small sales (around 1000 copies), but even such a small project did not escape the eyes of big companies. We can only hope that Roman and his colleague will not abandon the development after such a problem.
