The Acting Minister of Health, Dr. Galya Kondeva, canceled the order for the dismissal of the Director of UMBALSM “NI Pirogov”, Dr. Valentin Dimitrov, BTA reported, referring to the Ministry of Health.
At the moment, the inspections of the responsible institutions have not established abuses and corrupt practices that would require a change of the management of the emergency hospital. It has only been confirmed that administrative violations were committed during the awarding of public contracts in the medical facility, the department indicated.
“Pirogov” Hospital is an object of national importance. Annually, the medical facility takes over 200,000 emergency cases from all over the country and supports structures that have no alternative in Bulgaria. The medical facility is making its salary payments to all 2,400 employees without delay.
The contract for the management of the “Pirogov” UMBALSM expires at the end of April and a tender procedure is to be held, until the completion of which changes in the management are not mandatory, Minister Kondeva also wrote.
The tension generated in recent months has a negative impact on the trust of patients and on medical specialists, and the short-term change in management will lead to disruptions in their normal work rhythm, adds the caretaker minister.
On December 5, 2023, the Ministry of Health confirmed to BTA that the director of N.I. Pirogov UMBALSM, Dr. Valentin Dimitrov, was dismissed from his post. The Minister of Health Prof. Hristo Hinkov then announced that an audit carried out at Pirogov Hospital in the period June 2022 – July 2023 showed financial violations in the medical facility, as well as that the hospital was in a bad financial condition. Hinkov also indicated that the report was presented to Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov and Prof. Kostadin Angelov, chairman of the parliamentary committee on health care. However, Prof. Angelov said that the findings in “Pirogov” made by the “Internal Audit” of the Ministry of Health must be confirmed by an external audit. I categorically cannot agree that on the basis of these findings the director of the hospital should be replaced, Prof. Angelov also said and pointed out that the health committee received a report from the director of “Pirogov”, in which he claimed that on he is under pressure.
