/ world today news/ People against the power of corporations protested against the prepared agreement on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP).
The space around the monument of Patriarch Euthymius in the capital was filled with people carrying inscriptions and posters against TTIP – “Let’s disarm TTIP”, “Water is the most valuable wealth”, “Bulgarian, come out and defend your land!”, “For clean water, healthy land, Bulgaria!”.
The Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) is the name of the free trade agreement between the European Union and the United States. Complete lack of transparency in the negotiation process; lowering of consumer standards and invasion of GMO goods in Europe; creating international arbitrations that take away the sovereignty of national justice. These are the main reasons why the agreement raises serious concerns.
The negotiations started in complete obscurity at the beginning of 2013 and should end at the end of 2014. Due to public distrust and protests, this deadline will probably not be met.
Along with the European day of protest against TPTI on October 11, Bulgaria also participates in the world day against fracking. The two events are combined and will be held under a common flag.
The capital is not the only city in Bulgaria to rise up in protest. There are also events in Varna, Plovdiv, Shumen, Dobrich, Vidin and Pazardzhik. There are also protests in Berlin, Munich, Paris, Athens, Helsinki, Ljubljana, Brussels and many others.
