Acquittal for man who placed a beacon under the car in which friend Ayla Mintjes drove

A 23-year-old man who placed a beacon under a car used by Anis B., the friend of the later shot dead in March last year. 27-year-old Ayla Mintjes, will not receive a prison sentence. The court ruled that today.

The court states that it can indeed be deduced from the file that he stuck the level beacon under the car. But that cannot prove that he had the intent to prepare a murder. “On the basis of this, it can only be established about the knowledge of the suspect that the suspect knew that the car would be followed with the beacon.”

No illegal wiretapping

His actions were also not in violation of the law for placing wiretapping equipment. “A GPS tracker transmits its own current location data via a SIM card. This location can then be viewed on a laptop or mobile phone using appropriate software. The data that can be seen on the laptop or telephone is data provided by the GPS tracker itself, so that there is no illegal tapping, recording or eavesdropping of data.”

The car, which actually belonged to a cousin of Anis B., was on Meeuwenlaan in Noord on March 4 when the 23-year-old man stuck the level beacon underneath. He was arrested that same day. Officers found a telephone on him that had been used to contact the beacon. They also found film images of cars in the Maassluisstraat car park in Nieuw-West.

Other beacons

About two months later, the deadly shooting took place in the Maassluisstraat Mintjes died† Anis B. was also in the car that was shot at, but he was unharmed. Shortly before the shooting, two other suspects had tried to stick another beacon under the car. This also happened on or near Meeuwenlaan.

After the murder, a large number of suspects were arrested.
