Acne-Prone Skin Still Needs Sunscreen for Healthy Skin

Breaking the Myth: Sunscreen Is a Friend to Acne-Prone Skin

For years, a common misconception has lingered: sunscreen can worsen acne. But groundbreaking research by Wardah, a leading skincare brand, seeks to shatter this myth. Presented at the prestigious International Conference on Dermatology and Cosmetology (IDC) in Paris, the findings reveal that sunscreen, far from aggravating acne, can actually help improve skin condition.

"In our study comparing individuals with acne who used a serum alone versus those who combined serum with sunscreen, we saw a significant reduction in blackheads and pimples in the group using sunscreen," explains Diyah Utami, Associate Principal Skincare Scientist at Wardah. "This clearly demonstrates the benefits of incorporating sunscreen into an acne skincare routine.”

Protecting Skin from the Sun’s Harmful Rays

The research emphasizes the crucial role of sunscreen in shielding our skin from ultraviolet (UV) radiation, a known culprit in premature aging and skin damage. As Nagase Mana Tachibana, ASEAN Regional Skincare Expert, notes, UV rays come in two forms: UVA and UVB.

"UVA rays penetrate deep into the dermis, the skin’s inner layer," Tachibana explains, "where they damage collagen and elastin, the proteins responsible for youthful, supple skin. This can lead to premature wrinkles and fine lines.”

Meanwhile, UVB rays directly affect the skin’s outer layer, causing sunburns and potential DNA damage if left unprotected.

Choosing the Right Sunscreen for Acne-Prone Skin

Diyah Utami encourages those with acne to embrace sunscreen, but emphasizes the importance of choosing the right formula. "Water-based sunscreens are ideal as they are lightweight and absorb into the skin quickly, making them less likely to clog pores."

This advice extends to people with sensitive skin, who can benefit from the protective shield of sunscreen without risking irritation.

Diyah Utami reiterates the message: “Just because you have acne doesn’t mean you should avoid sunscreen. In fact, "*“Justru kalau kita ada masalah?acne and not using sunscreen, it gets exposed to excessive UV rays, which can worsen your acne without protection," says Diyah Utami. "So it’s actually beneficial to use sunscreen, and don’t be afraid to use it.”

This new research provides confidence and clarity for those who have long hesitated to include sunscreen in their acne skincare regimen. By choosing the right product and incorporating it into their daily routine, individuals can protect their skin from the sun’s damaging rays while simultaneously working towards clearer, healthier skin.
