ACM is unhappy with Apple’s proposed App Store policy for dating apps – IT Pro – News

1. Without that SDK, as you yourself indicate, no apps can be created. Without apps, no App Store. Without the App Store, no one will buy an iPhone. But as a developer you still pay for that SDK, which is $99 per year (bron).
2. It is to Apple’s advantage if there is a community. The more developers develop for your OS, the more you sell (both through the App Store and indirectly hardware)
3. As a developer, you simply pay for that, namely in the annual subscription ($99) that is required to be allowed to publish an app in the store. This includes 2 ‘Technical Support Incidents’ (TSI). For additional TSIs you just have to pay extra (2-pack $99, 5-pack $249, bron)
4. They don’t ‘should’, but they do. Much of this will be automated. This also ensures a better quality app store, which in turn is positive for Apple’s sales.
5. This is also included with the $99 subscription, so as a developer you already pay for that.
6. Offering an app in the app store is of course the basic functionality of an app store. They don’t advertise your app unless you pay for it (bron)
7. Also basic functionality of an app store
8. Required by law, since Apple is the seller of the apps. That’s how every store works, so Apple works just as well.

So all you mention is:

  • Basic functionality of an app store
  • Paid through the Apple Developer Program (annual subscription, required to publish to the App Store). So certainly not free as you mention in your last line, and (according to their own description) also not paid via the 15-30% of IAPs.
  • Paid through additional options (more than 2 technical tickets, advertise..)

But above all, Apple itself benefits enormously from this. The App Store has grown THROUGH these developers. Without their apps, there would be very limited demand for iPhones/iPads. Look at the “success” of Windows Mobile with a limited store, and you’ll see how valuable a good app store is to Apple. So let’s not pretend that Apple is pathetic because they have to maintain their App Store. They made in the first quarter of 2022 $34.6 billion (!!) profit, a large part of that goes to iPhone and services (including app store).

They should map out how much Apple costs if they offer 10,000 downloads of 1 App.

To elaborate on this, although we do not know exactly what Apple pays (cost) for this, we can look at what it costs at a competitor, purely in terms of file hosting in a data center. For example, let’s take a look at AWS S3. Open the pricing calculatorand let’s get started:
– Region: EU (Frankfurt) – Note that other regions such as ‘US East’ are cheaper, but of course we want it to be a bit close globally.
– S3 Storage classes and other features: S3 Standard (let’s keep it simple for example)
– S3 Standard storage: 1 GB per month (should be enough for an app such as Spotify, which is ~90 MB on my device)
– PUT … requests: 100 (only from 10,000 the price goes up slightly)
– GET … requests: 10.000 (10.000 downloads)
– Data returned by S3: 1000 GB (~100 MB app x 10.000 downloads = 1000 GB)
Total monthly cost: $0.83 (if you choose the US East Ohio region even $0.73)

Since Apple doesn’t offer it as a service, so it doesn’t have to be a profit margin, I’m pretty sure the cost to Apple will be even lower.
