Acknowledgments of receipt could soon change face

Google is currently testing a new design for delivery receipts in Google Messages, a change that could bring the app closer to WhatsApp in its interface.

Google Messages is no longer the same application as before since its compatibility with the RCS protocol, it even aims to become your main messaging application by authorizing the sending of high definition photos, by adding Snapchat-style filters or by integrating its Gemini AI.

Google is not abandoning the small interface updates that we appreciate so much at Frandroid, this time with a redesign of the acknowledgment of receipt system. The latter was, it must be said, a little confusing since its last version introduced in 2023. From now on, all messages will be affected.

New design and operation of acknowledgements

Currently, messages sent in an RCS conversation offer an icon-based acknowledgement system with checkmarks. A small clock indicates that the message is being sent, a single checkmark that it is sent, two checkmarks that it has been delivered to the recipient and finally two colored checkmarks (depending on the theme of the application) that indicate that it has been read.

These icons are placed below the message and only on the last one sent. Google would be testing a new operation according to the findings of 9to5Google. In this version, the icons are integrated into the message bubbles themselves, in the manner of WhatsApp. A new feature that now allows you to see these acknowledgments of receipt on all messages in a conversation and not just the last one.

After / 9to5Google

While it’s doubtful that Google will revert to its old system based on textual indications, this small design novelty could simplify the application’s interface even more. However, it is not yet guaranteed to be deployed, 9to5Google has so far only counted one user with the new system, so the test is for now quite limited.
