Disappointed and angry at the same time, the specialist described what he experienced afterwards. Whoever he called, no one seemed responsible or could help. The general practitioner is still disappointed today. “Nothing has happened since then,” he says. That the case is not yet on file with the police was shown to him at least on Tuesday, when the criminal police called him. But the policewoman only called because her files did not contain the dates of birth of four employees of the doctor’s office.
After the attack, the ten employees of the double doctor’s practice had symptoms such as headaches, nausea and the like for several days from inhaling the fumes and the stench, the doctor describes. Michael Nowotny is annoyed that the incident is not treated by the police as an attack, but as damage to property.
He had even submitted a complaint to the police and fire department in Zittau after they had not responded to the incident for days. Firefighters then pried open the masonry, which was also sprayed, in front of the entrance door of the doctor’s office. Help also came from a chemist at the university, who sprayed the contaminated areas with a liquid.
Only the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians in Saxony reacted quickly with a letter to the Görlitz public prosecutor: In it, they pointed out the unique selling point of the practice, as the only one in Zittau with a focus on diabetes.
The property damage is between 8,000 and 10,000 euros
The practice has been able to work again without restrictions since December. The doctor remains seated on the costs, such as the removal of the door, the floor and the demolition work on the entrance area. The insurance does not pay. “I already know that,” he says. He cannot yet say how high the costs are because not all of the invoices have been received. But it is foreseeable that they will be between 8,000 and 10,000 euros.
Even at the Scharf zoo in Hochwaldstraße in Zittau, right next to the Toom hardware store, you don’t know whether the police already have at least one lead. “Fortunately, the bestial stench was gone after a few days,” says one employee. On the same night of September 29, 2020 there was also a butyric acid attack here.
Acid attacks: are the acts related?
Police spokesman Kai Siebenäuger reported when asked by the SZ that the criminal service in Zittau was still investigating strangers in connection with the butyric acid attacks on suspicion of attempted dangerous bodily harm and property damage.
“Whether one or more perpetrators committed the act and whether the acts are related is still the subject of the investigation,” said the police spokesman. In the district of Görlitz there were two more butyric acid attacks in 2020.
The first reported incident of this kind occurred in 2020 between July 10 and 11 in the Görlitz district of Rauschwalde and the other attack occurred in Zittau between August 25 and September 1 in Eckartsberger Straße. Otherwise, the police in the districts of Görlitz and Bautzen have not been aware of any further cases since 2020.
