Not or never been, It’s raining sun rays: they will undoubtedly be sung over the next three evenings during the three sold-out reunion concerts of Acda and De Munnik. Why did the musical duo actually split up nine years ago? And how did they get to know each other?
“I was quite pissed off for at least a year, because I thought it was a strange decision,” says Thomas Acda in 2018 in conversation with the VARAguides.
In 2014, Acda and Paul de Munnik announced that they were quitting as a duo. They have known each other for 25 years. In 1989 they both started studying at the Kleinkunstacademie. There they not only get to know each other, but also Ellen ten Damme and Plien and Bianca. There is a personal and musical connection and the duo works together on study projects.
The collaboration is a success and the two students also start working on creating cabaret programs outside the academy. Their graduation production Show Cut was awarded the Pisuisse Prize in 1993, intended for emerging talent.
“We are different characters. Thomas is more extroverted than me,” says De Munnik de Volkskrant. “He comes up with wild plans and gives shots across the bow, I am more inclined to keep an eye on the big picture.”

Unknown then, now classics
Their first major theater program Wander’on, a mix of music and cabaret, was released in 1995. The songs in the show in particular are popular with the audience. So Acda and De Munnik decide to record and release these songs with a backing band. The self-titled album becomes a modest success, although some tracks become classics. The number When the fire is out is still in the Top 2000.
The songs from their next major theater program will also receive an accompanying album: Home. Met Not or never been the two men score their first big hit. The song ends up at second place in the major charts and other tracks from their follow-up album are also doing well. It’s raining sun rays is still the most frequently played Acda and De Munnik hit on Spotify (more than 61 million times).
With colleagues from Van Dik Hout, the men form the occasional formation De Poema’s, with which they score two big hits. My wooden heart from 1999 is doing very well, just like She makes the difference which entered the charts in 2001.
The now well-known cabaret sound of Acda and De Munnik is released on the album Ren Lenny Ren, which is part of the rock opera of the same name that they make. The music on this record is heavier and critics and fans are not very happy, although the performance is well attended.

‘Wanted to see what it would be like on my own’
After more theater shows and albums – and fewer hits – the duo decided to end their collaboration in 2014. They will give their last concert for the time being in Theater Carré.
“Paul is especially tired of touring,” says Acda The world goes on in their announcement. But exactly why they stop remains unclear. “The only reason I didn’t want to continue with Thomas was that I wanted to see what it would be like on my own,” De Munnik now says in de Volkskrant.
In addition to his singing activities, Acda is also working solo as an actor: this is how he played roles Everything is Love, All Stars in series Itch. But in the meantime he misses his singing partner quite a bit. “Paul and I always had an even balance and knew exactly what we had in each other,” says Acda. “When that disappears, that is also a big part of you. Well, that takes a while.”
The student friends have had little contact for years, except for a few casual performances. When the world almost comes to a standstill during the corona period, the two decide to visit each other. “Paul’s first sentence was: ‘I want to tell you that I didn’t do it very well,'” says Acda. “That was a text that I needed. He came to me with his cap in his hand, as it used to be called. And after that it was all right again as far as I was concerned.”

Acda and De Munnik announce comeback on Qmusic
Single, shows and documentary
The friendship is revived. And the stage is shared again: both Acda and De Munnik are part of the occasional formation The Streamers. The two made the single with colleagues Maan and Typhoon When I see you againwhich became their biggest hit success since 2001.
The famous duo of yesteryear will definitely return this year. In March, Acda and De Munnik announce that they will make music again, with the kick-off single Tomorrow will be fantastic – which will receive gold status. Three reunion concerts are announced and they sell out in no time. Three more shows will follow in December.
Just like a few decades ago, their concert will be accompanied by an accompanying album, which will also be released on Thursday. And after that? De Munnik: “Everything is open. There are no concrete plans for after Ziggo yet. We’ll see, and that’s nice.”
Their album AEDM will be released on Thursday. A documentary about Acda and De Munnik will be shown on BNNVARA on NPO3 for six weeks from Friday 3 November. The reunion concert will be broadcast on December 8.
