A 21-year-old man, arrested at Christmas 2021 after having entered the grounds of Windsor Castle with a loaded crossbow, admitted on Friday (3.2.2023) before the British Justice that his intention was to attack Queen Elizabeth II.
Jaswant Singh Chail, originally from Southampton, in the south of England, pleaded guilty to three charges – including one under the Treason Act 1842 – for attempting to “injure the person of her majesty, Queen Elizabeth II”, during A hearing in London criminal court.
Christmas in Windsor due to the pandemic
The young man was arrested around 8:30 in the morning of December 25, 2021 in the grounds surrounding the castle, located 40 km east of London, where the monarch, then 95 years old, exceptionally spent Christmas alone, due to the pandemic.
The monarch spent Christmas there, the first since the death of her husband Felipe, after having given up traveling, as was her custom, to her residence in Sandringham to celebrate the holidays with her family, due to the outbreak of covid-19.

After his arrest, the suspect was admitted to a psychiatric facility. The Sun newspaper had published images of a video allegedly released on the suspect’s Snapchat account minutes before he entered the castle grounds.
In him he is seen with a crossbow, dressed in a black sweater and his head covered by a hood. With his face covered by an intimidating black metal mask, he could be heard saying: “I’m sorry for what I’ve done and what I’m going to do. I will try to assassinate Queen Elizabeth.”
