Accused of Allied with Erdogan, France Bans This Group of Activities

PARIS, KOMPAS.com – France forbid right wing group Turkey, Gray Wolves, carried out any activity, after they were accused of destroying a wall commemorating genocide against ethnic Armenians near the city of Lyon, with pro-Turkish slogans.

Gray Wolves, an international organization, seen as allied with the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and is suspected of being behind the destruction of the memorial wall.

Launch BBC Indonesia on Tuesday (3/11/2020), the memorial wall was colored with yellow graffiti at the weekend that included Erdogan’s initials.

The acts of destruction come amid heightened tensions between France and Turkey over a territorial dispute in Nagorno-Karabakh.

Fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan erupted in the mountainous region of Nagorno-Karabakh on 27 September.

The territory is recognized internationally as part of Azerbaijan, but is controlled by ethnic Armenians.

Turkey has supported Azerbaijan in the conflict.

The move to ban the Gray Wolves group will be submitted to the French cabinet on Wednesday (03/11).

French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said the ban meant that any activity or gathering by the Gray Wolves could result in fines or imprisonment.

Since the group is an international organization, the ban will only limit its activities in France.
