United States President Joe Biden is accused of having memory problems and being senile. The report was released by Robert Hur, a federal government prosecutor who brought up the mental condition of the number one person in the US.
The document also states that Joe Biden has difficulty remembering the date of death of his son, Beau.
“How dare he accuse that,” Biden said angrily after responding to the report from the White House Diplomatic Reception Room.
Beau Biden died in 2015 after battling brain cancer. Beau is an Iraq War veteran who served as Delaware’s attorney general.
Regarding the accusations against Biden, neurologists say not remembering the names of acquaintances or having difficulty remembering past dates, especially when under stress, are part of normal signs of aging.
“If you asked me when my mother died, I couldn’t tell you the exact year because it was many years ago,” said Dr. Paul Newhouse, a physician at the Vanderbilt Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center.
Based on Newhouse’s experience, forgetting someone’s name and forgetting dates do not predict who will experience memory problems. Only a doctor or neurologist can make such a diagnosis, not an outside observer.
Dennis Selkoe, co-director of the Ann Romney Center for Neurologic Diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, agrees that forgetting a real name doesn’t provide much insight into potential memory problems. In fact, stress and lack of sleep can disrupt memory, regardless of a person’s age.
“Naming proper nouns is not an adequate basis for making conclusions about whether someone has the more consistent and more concerning substantive progressive memory impairment,” Dr Selkoe said.
