Accusations Against Biden: What Do Republicans Have On Hand?

With a majority in the House of Representatives, Republicans want to launch investigations into the Biden family. The focus is on Hunter Biden, the president’s son. A laptop plays an important role.

The list presented by James Comer was long: nine points, nine felonies: conspiracy or fraud against the United States, wire fraud, tax evasion and money laundering. Comer, a Republican congressman, says he has evidence that members of the Biden family committed or benefited from such crimes.

Comer and other Republicans want to get off the ground now that they have a majority in the House of Representatives. What they believe to be the Biden family’s criminal dealings should become their top priority. And their investigation is aimed at Joe Biden.

Didn’t Joe Biden know about the deals?

Biden’s weak point, Republicans seem to believe, is his son Hunter, his problem child. The 52-year-old battled his drug addiction for many years and his short career in the military ended after a positive drug test.

In business, he initially worked as a consultant and investor. In 2014, when Barack Obama’s father was vice president, his son was appointed to the board of directors of the Ukrainian gas company Burisma. The pay was good, tens of thousands of dollars a month, money that Hunter Biden spent on drugs, as he later wrote in his autobiography. At the same time, he was on the board of directors of a Chinese energy company. Millions also flowed from there.

Joe Biden has always claimed that he knows nothing about his son’s business. Joe Biden said in an interview three years ago that he only found out that his son was on the Burisma board when he was already on the board.

Republicans don’t buy it. Donald Trump in particular continues to insinuate dark machinations: “Why did the wife of the mayor of Moscow give the Bidens $3.5 million? I think Putin knows, he should publish it. We should know the answer,” Trump said in the march in a television interview. Hunter Biden denies: he has nothing to do with the company that received the money.

Laptop full of personal files

One source Republicans are relying on is a laptop that showed up at a Delaware computer store two years ago. Hunter Biden forgot it there, they said. Shortly before the presidential election, many liberal media outlets were suspicious of the story, as the New York Post ran the story.

It was actually Hunter Biden’s computer, as it later turned out, and it was full of personal belongings. Above all, however, there were e-mails suggesting that he had connected businessmen with his father. “If this were true, it would contradict the president’s claim that he was not involved and knew nothing of his son’s affairs, either in Ukraine or elsewhere,” said journalist Olivia Nuzzi. She has been trying to uncover the truth about the New York Magazine notebook, which has since passed through too many hands, she told NPR.

How far the material Republicans have collected in the House of Representatives will carry is difficult to estimate at the moment. But it looks like they could make life difficult for the Biden family.
