Accuracy: Six in 10 consumers ‘just getting by’ – Greeks are the most pessimistic in the EU – 2024-05-09 06:08:09

The percentage of consumers who state that they are “just getting by” stood at 61%, while the percentage of those who report that they are drawing money from their savings increased to 12%. These are reflected in the latest Economic Situation Research bulletin of the Institute of Economic Studies of IOBE.

Even 56% of citizens estimate that there will be a new rise in prices at the same or even faster rate in the next period. On the contrary, only 17% state that they expect stability.

83% of households do not consider saving possible in the next 12 months, while only 15% consider it possible or very likely.

The difficult financial situation of households can also be seen from consumers’ intention to make important purchases (furniture, electrical appliances, etc.) in the next 12 months. 55% (up from 49%) of consumers predict they will spend less or much less, while just 5% (up from 4%) expect the opposite.

Greek consumers are the most pessimistic in the EU with -41.7 points, and by a wide margin from the next worst country which is Estonia with -29.8.

The consumer confidence index strengthened slightly in April and stood at -41.7 points, compared to -44.7 points in March, with Greek consumers again being the most pessimistic in the EU, with consumers in Estonia (-29.8 ) and Cyprus (-26.6) to follow.

Almost six out of ten consumers (59%) foresee a slight or noticeable deterioration in the country’s economic situation, compared to 22% (from 19%) who expect stability.
