A very strange event could happen next year. According to a Bloomberg reportwho claims to have spoken with sources close to the managerial decisions of Activision Blizzard, there would be no main game Call of Duty in the year 2023.
The decision would be a highly unusual moment in franchise history. Since its first appearance in 2003, every year Activision (now Activision Blizzard) has released a game at full price, not counting secondary or free titles. The only exception was 2004, the year dedicated to the expansions of the first game.
Apparently, the problem would have been the disappointing performance that it had Call of Duty: Vanguard in sales, because it did not meet expectations. Because of this, some executives concluded that it had been “cannibalized” by the previous year’s game. This would not really be Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold Warbut directly the free ‘battle royale’ Call of Duty: Warzone.
Therefore, by 2023 the conclusion would have been reached to delay the arrival of a new Call of Duty at the end of the year, as usual. This would not have been influenced by the purchase of Microsoft, so it is not known if when the deal is finalized in the summer of that year the original production rate will be resumed.
And what will Activision do in the meantime?
It is worth wondering how the space that would occupy Call of Duty next year. Basically, the title that comes out this year (whose name we don’t know yet) will receive additional content and will remain in force for a longer time than normal.
On the other hand, it will not be a year without any trace of Call of Duty. After all, another free game will be released that year. It’s probably like Warzoneas the Treyarch studio will be helping in its development in the meantime.
