According to Jurēvics, a candidate for the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs has not yet been selected in the “New Unity”.

According to the politician, it is too early to mention specific candidates, while Jurēvics pointed out that the parliament is currently on recess and the next session is scheduled for next Thursday, April 11, but Kariņas’ resignation takes effect a day earlier. Jurēvics expressed that by next week Wednesday, April 10, there should be clarity about the possible next foreign minister.

According to the politician, the next foreign minister must have clear experience and understanding of the main challenges in the current geopolitical situation. The minister should be able to represent the country internationally in order to strengthen sanctions against Russia and continue to provide support to Ukraine.

The deputy emphasized that the choice and the initiative to promote the candidate for the next minister of foreign affairs belongs to Prime Minister Evika Siliņi (JV).

As reported, Kariņš announced on Thursday after a meeting with Prime Minister Siliņa that he has decided to resign from the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs.

For several months now, the scandal regarding the private flights used by the delegations led by Kariņš during his premiership has been relevant in the public space, which has drawn criticism from a part of society.

From 2021 to September 2023, according to the information gathered by the State Chancellery, 613,830 euros were spent on private flights for the business trips of Kariņas and his employees, but together with the part of the costs covered by the European Union, the expenses reach 1.36 million euros.

Last week, the General Prosecutor’s Office announced that it had opened criminal proceedings for the possible waste of funds related to the use of charter flights for these business trips.
