TECH NEWS – It’s even hotter than a GeForce GTX 770 card with no fans spinning…yet AMD refuses to replace it?
The AMD Radeon RX 7900 series has been out for a couple of weeks now, but the reference cards have very high peak and average temperatures. In Hungarian: The video card is getting hot, and several people have mentioned this on Reddit. A user bought a reference card and claims that his GPU is not working as expected. Nero1338 is AMDHelp subreddit wrote that the Radeon RX 7900 XTX reference card reached a maximum temperature of 110C during Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. The fans were running at full speed and after installing the new drivers, he set the house fans to 100%, but that didn’t help either.
The user requested a warranty replacement from AMD, but the company refused, arguing that the maximum temperature of 110 degrees is normal on the reference video card. The only problem is that the video card takes lower clock signals due to the high temperature, which leads to a decrease in performance. This was answered by another by the user, to which AMD wrote that they can request a replacement, but there is no question of a refund. Overheating can only occur on the reference MBA design of the video card, but 110 degrees can be the absolute limit at which the card starts to degrade its performance. However, non-reference boards take up 3-3.5 slots and have a unique PCB design, and this is not a problem for them.
The problem appears to be related to the mounting pressure, the quality of the thermal paste, and the thermal pads used by the cards. As soon as we replace them, the board overheating problem will disappear. But this also voids the warranty. However, AMD SHOULD pay attention to the problem by all means, because users shouldn’t do these things (not everyone understands). For this reason, it’s best to wait for AMD to bring new card sets to stores, because some early models may be affected.
