MADRID, 2 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –
Acciona has launched an initiative in the construction works of the Fargo-Moorhead anti-flood canal, in the United States, to introduce for the first time the use of renewable biofuel generated from oil from hydrotreated vegetable residues (HVO) to power heavy machinery for civil work.
This action is part of the objective of the Spanish company to decarbonize the construction of infrastructures, applying it in this case together with Shikun & Binui USA and North American Construction Group, which form the consortium that carries out these works.
During the six months of this initiative, Acciona will use 385,000 liters of renewable biofuel in two bulldozers, which will be monitored to collect operating and maintenance data, as reported by the company in a statement.
The renewable biofuel will come from the second largest biofuel producing facility in the United States, located in North Dakota.
HVO has similar properties to traditional fossil fuel, but generates 90% fewer emissions. That remaining 10% corresponds mainly to the emissions generated by the HVO production process and not to its consumption.
With the implementation of this pilot, a reduction of 1,000 tons of CO2 is expected in the Fargo-Moorhead project. At the same time, it is estimated that its extended use in the project could reduce almost 40% of the greenhouse gas emissions forecast for Acciona’s Construction business by 2023.
