Rostock / Neubrandenburg (dpa / mv) – In the sweltering heat, there were several serious accidents in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania over the weekend in which two people died and at least six people were seriously injured. As police spokesmen in Rostock and Neubrandenburg explained, the main cause of the accident was inattentiveness at the wheel, which caused cars to slip into the oncoming lane or to other vehicles in traffic jams. The fatal accidents occurred on Saturday evening in Rostock-Markgrafenheide and a few hours earlier in Sternberg (Ludwigslust-Parchim). There was also a long traffic jam on Sunday due to an accident on Autobahn 20 near Gützkow in the north, but it remained with property damage, as it was said.
A 34-year-old driver died in Markgrafenheide. His car had collided with an oncoming car in a curve. According to initial investigations, the driver of the oncoming car had come into the oncoming lane. The 38-year-old and an inmate of his car fled on foot, but were caught by a sniffer dog. The suspected cause of the accident was measured at 1.56 per thousand breath alcohol. He is being investigated for negligent homicide. The cars were totaled.
A few hours earlier, there had been a similar accident on federal highway 104 in Sternberg. A 49-year-old driver came into the opposite lane, ran into at least one car and collided head-on with another car. The 49-year-old died. Three other people from the other cars were injured. The damage to four cars was estimated at around 92,000 euros.
A 42-year-old driver was seriously injured in a collision near Mölschow (Vorpommern-Greifswald) on the island of Usedom. A 50-year-old driver ignored the 42-year-old driver’s right of way when turning left. The person who caused the accident, who remained uninjured, was found to be 1.8 per thousand breath alcohol.
A number of serious accidents occurred on Friday in the great heat, including at Pruchten on the way to and from the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula. At first, a driver had hit the end of a traffic jam and pushed four other cars together. Six people were injured, some seriously, and five cars were badly damaged. As a result, a car in oncoming traffic hit a five-year-old boy who was stuck in a traffic jam with his family, but had moved out of the car into the shade because of the heat. The child was badly injured.
