An accident involving four “subway surfers” occurred at Vienna’s Schönbrunn U4 station on Tuesday afternoon. The young men had ridden illegally on the roof of a train, and two crashed into a pedestrian crossing on the route as they entered, according to the Wiener Linien.
The professional rescue service and the Samaritan Association brought one victim under resuscitation and another with life-threatening conditions to a hospital, and one boy suffered minor injuries. Initial feedback initially said that the “subway surfers” had gotten into the circuit. However, there is no overhead line in this area.
Four guys rode on the roof of U4
The four boys, who according to the professional rescue service are probably around 20 years old, rode illegally on the roof of the subway from the direction of Hütteldorf shortly after 4 p.m., the Wiener Linien reported in a statement. Two of them hit a pedestrian bridge as they entered Schönbrunn station and sustained life-threatening injuries. One “surfer” escaped with minor injuries, while the fourth boy apparently remained uninjured. The subway driver is currently receiving crisis psychological care. The U4 could not run between Meidling Hauptstraße and Braunschweiggasse for the time being.
The exact course of the accident should be analyzed together with the police using video evaluation, according to the Wiener Linien. This tragic accident would show how life-threatening such reckless actions or tests of courage are. They also focus on prevention and education: workshops have been held in schools for years in collaboration with the education directorate and the police. Children and young people would be sensitized to the topic of safety and correct behavior in and around public transport through lectures and guided tours.
