In South Tyrol there was a terrible accident during the night of Sunday. A car had driven into a tour group. Six people died. The dead are Germans. Most of them come from North Rhine-Westphalia.

The six people between the ages of 20 and 25 had died at the scene of the accident. Eleven people were also injured, four of them seriously. The driver of the high-horsepower sports car was probably drunk when he killed the tourists. The group was on a ski vacation and is said to have been on the way home from a disco visit to the winter sports resort.

The car drove around 1:00 a.m. in the village of Luttach in the Ahrntal valley to the 17 people who were standing on the main street. The police assume one accident and not from an intentional act.
The victims have yet to be identified. “The new year begins with this terrible tragedy,” said South Tyrolean governor Arno Kompscher at a press conference in Luttach. “We are all shocked.” The news agency “Ansa” reported from the press conference that the group came from the north Germany,
The injured came to hospitals in the region, a woman was flown to Innsbruck to the hospital. The 27-year-old driver survived and was arrested, the police said. He was accused of killing on the road. According to media reports, the local had a very high alcohol level in the blood and was traveling very quickly.
A spokesman for the fire department in Luttach told the dpa that the people were on the main street of the place. They probably went out. The victims probably came from different regions in Germany. 160 emergency services were on site. Helmut Abfalterer from the fire brigade told the “Daily Online” bad scenes: “It looked like on a battlefield.”

The police are investigating the course of the accident, the Carabinieri State Command said. According to the information, the victims still have to be identified. In the group, not everyone knew each other and not all had documents with them, the police said. The Federal Foreign Office initially did not comment on the incident on request.
The area is located in Italy on the Austrian border and is known as a skiing and winter sports area. Luttach is a village in the Ahrntal municipality with just over 1,000 inhabitants. It is near Bruneck.
The place is known by German youth groups who come to ski. According to dpa information, there have long been complaints in the place about cars racing on the main street and lack of controls.
