The Oświęcim district court found on Thursdaythat the driver of a Fiat seicento is guilty of accidentally causing an accident in 2017 in Oświęcim, in which Beata Szydło. At the same time, he conditionally discontinued the proceedings for one year. The court found that the BOR driver had also broken the law.
Seicento driver must pay for 1 thous. zł. the victims of the accident – former Prime Minister Beata Szydło and a BOR officer. It has two months to do so from the final judgment. The court released him from the costs of the trial. He also pointed out that other road users had contributed to the accident.
According to witness statements, the government column did not use sound signals. – There is no doubt that if such signals were used, the victim and witnesses would hear them – argued the judge. Thus, government cars moving in Oświęcim, when the collision with seicento occurred, did not have the status of a privileged column – the court decided.
“Because this case raises unnecessary emotions of some media, despite the unlawfulness of the verdict, I would like to declare now that I am relinquishing my favor,” Szydło wrote on Twitter on Thursday evening.
Today’s verdict in conversation with Onet was also commented on by convicted Sebastian Kościelnik. – For sure my mood is now better than even three years ago, at the very beginning of the case. First of all, I am pleased that the court did not recognize the government column as a privileged column, the convict told us.
– The judgment itself, in my opinion, contradicts what the court itself has established on the government column. Of course it is a surprise to me because I was hoping for acquittal. Together with my defender, we have already decided that we will appeal against him. Consolation is the fact that the court sent a request to the prosecutor’s office to punish the BOR driver – stated Kościelnik.
The accident occurred on February 10, 2017 in Oświęcim. Police said three government cars with then-Prime Minister Beata Szydło (her vehicle was in the middle) were ahead of Fiat Seicento. His driver Sebastian Kościelnik passed the first car, then began to turn left and hit the car with the then head of government, which in consequence hit the tree. The prime minister and BOR officer were injured.
